Blue tick hacks trying to downplay cabinet minister Amber Rudd referring to Diane Abbott as “coloured” - claiming it shouldn’t be an issue because she apparently “never had any intention to be racist” - must‘ve all forgotten this is the same Amber Rudd who resigned over Windrush!
08 Mar, 07:16 PM UTC
Rudd is accused of racism by some for saying the outdated term “coloured woman” rather than “Woman of Colour”. In a sentence condemning the amount of online abuse WoC receive. Why examine someone’s intent when you can get outraged over semantic missteps?

Ok I'm getting confused with the political correctness. Yesterday Amber Rudd apologised for calling Diane Abbott coloured. I've just been watching ITV news and this girl said "woman of colour" when talking about Meghan Markle. Can someone explain the difference Njames World 🇬🇧's photo on Amber Rudd

I was a JSA claimant
Two people in this jobcentre photo with Amber Rudd have referred me for a benefit sanction. One for volunteering and the other for not applying for a job in Chard, even though I could not get home without a car. I wrote about both last year... 1.1 and 1.4 I was a JSA claimant's photo on Amber Rudd

Blue tick hack: “It’s sentiment and intention that matters, and on those metrics we can all confidently dismiss any notion Amber Rudd is a racist.” Literally anyone else: “Amber Rudd literally deported British residents while she was Home Secretary on the basis of their race.”

Tory Party Deputy Chairman @JamesCleverly says he was not offended when Amber Rudd described Diane Abbott as ‘coloured’ Let me remind you that last year he defended Pendle Tory Councillor, Rosemary Carroll, who tweeted a racist joke comparing brown people to dogs #ToryRacism Socialist Voice's photo on Amber Rudd

IMO it's a problem that Westminster Reporters are the "top" of political reporting (esp for TV), but tend to treat politics-as-performance, not policy. So Amber Rudd made a "gaffe" (performance),but is reported as unrelated to/ almost bigger than policy (eg "Hostile Environment")

James Cleverley calls Amber Rudd's outdated use of 'coloured' to describe Diane Abbott a mistake. The rest of us would call it a glimpse into unacceptable, outdated racist attitudes all the way to the top in the Tory Party, resulting in #HostileEnvironment for many #ToryRacism
08 Mar, 11:23 AM UTC
Theresa 'Hostile Environment' May was a remainer. Amber 'Windrush' Rudd was a remainer. Tony 'Blow Up the Brown People' Blair was a remainer. If, after all this time, you're still punting the 'all racists voted leave' bullshit, I'm sorry, but you're a fucking arsehole.

. ⁦@AmberRuddHR⁩ has consistently been one of Diane Abbott’s biggest defenders against racial abuse. Those who speak out to support Diane, possibly won’t be so quick to do so now. Let’s calm down about Amber Rudd’s ‘coloured’ gaffe | Coffee House

@SirWayneKerr I think in all the kerfuffle over 'coloured'. we're missing the point. Amber Rudd doesn't seem to notice there was anything racist about a policy that led to the deportation of black, Caribbean-origin residents, even when many of them were actually British citizens. REAL racism.

@MatthewStadlen @LBC Matt on the whole you do a great job. I listened to you tonight and I was so disappointed. Amber Rudd made a slip off the tongue and you want her sacked. What about Diane Abbott when she blatantly rants against white Britain or race baits. I don't hear you say to much about that

That is racist cobblers----Sir Trevor Phillips (one of the most intelligent people in the spotlight), who was the founder of the Equality & Human Rights Commission says Amber Rudd did nothing wrong in saying 'coloured', to quote Trevor 'There are better things to be offended by'

@HenryNewman This is classic Abbott, attempts to pour blame on the opposition with no acknowledgment whatsoever that what she says is totally inaccurate. Disgraceful. Goes along with shameful attempts to exploit Amber Rudd ‘gaff’ yesterday.

It worries me a Cabinet Minister - one who was previously in charge of a Home Office that was presided over the Windrush scandal which saw Caribbeans wrong deported and denied legal rights - can so casually bandy around a term like coloured. #Windrush
09 Mar, 07:29 AM UTC
@davidschneider @Grombags @XxMimsi Amber Rudd used "coloured" to identify a black person. There was no mistaking who she was referencing. When the term "dark forces" is being used, you become offended because it "may" refer to an anti-Semitic trope. Or not. As in this case. Stop projecting your trope radar.

@LBC @MatthewStadlen When I was growing up, ‘coloured’ was the acceptable term, and ‘black’, was not, then it seemed to change, but not sure when, or who drove that change. If Amber Rudd had used the ‘N’ word, then by all means sack her, otherwise, get a life! Now this is positive discrimination!
