Just when you thought you were starting to understand British politics, something or someone called Black Rod enters the scene. https://t.co/uw9lVeQHlz
Its objectively funnier that she’s referred to as ‘Black Rod’ and not ‘The Black Rod’
To commemorate the extraordinary scenes in parliament last night, I give you Black Rod with the hair of Gerry Francis as she stares down John Bercow with the hair of Gerry Francis. https://t.co/zUp76eLVKq
A Black Rod in Fall Black.
Force it, @BorisJohnson
Move them beyond the pale.
Spring Forward, FALL BLACK.
"Bizarre scenes from UK Parliament as it's suspended through Black Rod" https://t.co/yiXML8mIDt
I was in the chamber. Despite the fact that we are not allowed to film or photograph, this video was taken by a Labour MP.
They acted like they were in a pub brawl. A stunt the Speaker knew about and was waiting as he was discourteous to Black Rod.
This Black Rod thing is a trip. Let me break this down for all the Americans in something we can all understand-a sports-like play by play of what exactly happened in Parliament last night. 1/
The Black Rod has closed Parliament for a month. Ask yourself if this is normal. Ask yourself who could apply the leverage needed to get the Queen to order this adjournment. Ask yourself if the Crown can now stop what is coming next with no Parliament. This is fun to watch. https://t.co/HoMUQjbm61
Then Bercow begrudging left with Black Rod, who I hear is going as The Joker for Halloween, and Labour cheered and shook his hand as he left. The Tories had already abandoned the chamber earlier, as old men need their sleep. One yelled at him to go earn his substantial salary. 5/ https://t.co/X8Ac2fhcfg
So, John Bercow, the House of Commons Speaker who recently announced he will step down after Parliament reconvenes on Halloween (IKR?) was to be escorted by Black Rod (a cheery woman pictured below) to the House of Lords to enact prorogue, which formally suspends Parliament. 2/ https://t.co/lp02MPIFTM
Bercow basically took a long time to tell the chamber that he didn't agree with anything the Prime Minister had done, but that he would do his duty, just as Black Rod was doing. But he did not want to go and held on to his chair as MP's waived signs that read "silenced." 4/ https://t.co/hUAcsCULub
Speaking on her husband’s retirement announcement, Sally Bercow said that she was disappointed that she wouldn’t get to spend as much time with Black Rod.
Nothing says ‘truth is stranger than fiction’, or reifies British heraldic theatrics as the stuff of fantasy, much like learning that there’s a woman known as the *Lady Usher of the Black Rod* who walked into Commons with a fucking gold rod to suspend the house.
Black Rod serves as a reminder, just as "The Second" does that Westminster is the English Parliament. All the parliamentary traditions flow from the pre-union English parliament whilst ours simply ended and our Parliament became a lobby for the Supreme Court.
Here's everything you need to know about Black Rod, the woman who controls Parliament with her stick https://t.co/f9bwOgBX6F
" As part of the ritual, as Black Rod approaches the doors to the chamber of the House of Commons to make their summons, the doors are slammed in their face. " This is soooo weird.
Disgraceful antics of Labour members and John Bercow.
Disgusting to keep the Lords and Black Rod waiting when they were acting on behalf of the Queen.
Labour MPs take an oath to the Queen when entering Parliament yet as true Communists they stick two fingers up at her.
maybe the real lady black rod was the friends we made along the way
Black Rod gets paid £93,000 a year... so I suppose she's pretty happy with the silly job title...
Jeez, you sure do need to get out of your remainer bubble. So, the latest antics from opposition members does not show contempt for parliament - like videoing in the chamber and singing 'the red flag' and shouting over black rod...
Parliament is responsible for some of the best metal band names in years. I prefer the earlier work of Black Rod but think Prorogue have done well to get over the passing of their original drummer.
