Y'all mad at Ms. Maya Angelou?
"Still I Rise" Ms. Maya Angelou?
The same Ms. Maya Angelou who hung with Dr. King, Brother Malcolm, Brother DuBois and a host of ancestors? The same Ms. Maya Angelou y'all was caping for because she was a sex worker? Y'all mad?
Step Three: Black folk who survived segregation have a thing about titles because no matter what they accomplished they would still be addressed by white folk by their first names. I could write a WHOLE THREAD about that alone. So Dr. Angelou was teaching her a lot in that clip.
@queen_bae_@h0tcheeto@WhoElseButLL ngl i agree that it was excessive. u can tell that it was an honest mistake on the girl’s behalf and while i agree with dr. angelou that correcting her was necessary, the way she corrected her made the girl feel really embarrassed :( it alrdy takes confidence to ask a question
I really don’t get it. There is an older Black woman in my office. I call her “Ms. Yvonne” EVERY SINGLE DAY out of respect. Why is this such a hard concept? Nothing Dr. Angelou did was wrong and I can truly tell how some of you (weren’t) raised.
Another reason to praise Dr. Angelou.
And I’ll be honest - I might’ve made the same mistake at age 14. And it would’ve been an honor to have an icon correct me so I never made that same mistake again. https://t.co/uPvJ6VxYJG
@Ebonyteach@profblmkelley I just looked at that tag. I am clearly getting old. Dr. Angelou was respectful, she was 62. I'm sorry, but where I come from, a teenager/young adult does not casually call a 62 yo woman by her 1st name. This used to be common sense in Black spaces.
I'm biting my tongue/fingers to not rant about how some of this reaction is fueled not by what Dr Angelou said or how she said it (which were both fine, IMO) but instead by how uncomfortable it makes ppl to see a Black woman commanding and demanding the respect she deserves.
People talk a lot of crap when they are not in someone’s presence. Y’all would have taken the lesson from Dr. Maya Angelou and then shared the story with your family for generations about the time #MayaAngelou schooled you. Stop it and shut up.
@DamoneWilliams_ So Dr. Angelou gave her a lesson on both ends of that interaction. On one end, be respectful when addressing your elders. On the other, never be afraid (even when you ARE an elder) to apologize if you believe you've overreacted/been needlessly curt with a fellow human being.
You may say you’ll slap me
On your twitter screens
But at the end of the day
My ass you cannot beat
Cause I said what I said
And I meant what I meant
And if you too have a problem
Then you have issues I sense
It is MISS Angelou
Yes you may say DR
But not Maya
Cause Still I Rise https://t.co/2wjwlP24JK
Dr. Maya Angelou is trending because many people weren't raised to have respect, manners, or etiquette and it shows in their interactions. Dr. Maya Angelou had every right to correct that young woman. She was too familiar. https://t.co/AFqeRDdJRc
VALID! Respect is virtue that isn’t held in high regard today. What Dr. Angelou is saying in this clip is “I expect respect from you and everyone”. You know, If I had a doctorate, everyone would be expected to use it. #DrHubby #DrDad #DrMe 🤷♂️ https://t.co/9Y9nPfifWa
If someone asks u to address them a certain way, that’s is the way u should address them.
It’s not about respecting elders because not everyone deserves respect (she did tho!). But keep in mind, she was also a DR, so “ms Angelou” is the least you can call her
Y’all really butt hurt because Dr. Angelou wanted to be respected? Most of the people upset are the ones okay with being called bitches, hoes, and the N-word and dance to it daily. GTFOH. 🙄 https://t.co/mRerGRyJx9
I wouldn’t have called her Maya because I don’t know her and we have no rapport but in the event that it did come out, I would’ve redirected her belittlement by saying “Dr. Angelou, talking to me like that isn’t necessary. You’re not showing me the respect that you’re demanding”
@yashar Surely, goodness & mercy this is NOT why Dr. Angelou is trending. My God...How much have we managed to normalize a dumbed down society? This is bizarre, but not surprising. We have got to be very careful who we allow to teach our kids history & manners.
