EXCL: Labour considering abolishing House of Lords if it wins next election, replacing it with upper house of nations and regions, leaked report reveals - story by @jessicaelgot
This sounds like a damn fine piece of work to me. At a time so many people feel politics Is broken, we need big radical change to try to fix it. https://t.co/uUxV0wbqgx
There is a *very* strong case to be made that by appointing so many utterly unworthy people to the House of Lords, Boris Johnson has accelerated its demise. However strong the arguments for retention, the ennoblements Zac Goldsmith, Claire Fox & Daniel Moylan will destroy them.
🚨Exclusive: I’ve been leaked Gordon Brown’s big internal review on devolution and the union.

How do you feel about Labour plans to abolish the House of Lords and replace it with an upper house of nations & regions?
Would you support @UKLabour
plans to grant sweeping new powers to local regions & devolved nations as well?
Good to see the Protocol Bill has been tabled for second reading in the Lords on the second day back October 11th @trussliz
staying true to her promises that her Government would facilitate its speedy progress
Was looking through the wikipedia list of fugitives from justice who disappeared and sandwiched between cartel drug lords, terrorists, serial killers, and bank robbers was a former Kamen Rider. https://t.co/tLPL4ExFNf
Is this it? Labour’s grand plan to “save the union” amounts to devolution of stamp duty, which the Scottish Parliament already has, “constitutional rights” which aren’t legislatively possible in the UK, & promising to abolish the Lords, again. https://t.co/LGAEKkvbX4

Tracey Allen still works for former General Secretary Iain McNichol in the Lords. https://t.co/oDMtieFwVY

Labour may have plans to get excited about...
- Abolishment of House of Lords
- Crackdown on standards in Govt
- Giving the electoral commission power to hand out larger fines
- Banning MP's 2nd jobs
- A constitutional guarantee of social & economic rights...
- Powers for local people to promote bills in parliament via democratically elected bodies
- Powers for mayors on education, transport & research funding
- New tax powers for some devolved governments, which could include stamp duty
Gives one hope...
Now where have I heard this before 🤔
Ah yes, here's Keir Hardie promising to end the House of Lords in 1910.
Anyone still believing this nonsense after 112 years needs to take a long hard look at themselves. https://t.co/7vHJSYWR8C
Has anyone ever met any Yes voter who would vote No if only the House of Lords was abolished and replaced? Why oh why does GB think this is how to save the Union? https://t.co/b6rwZOpsfi
Don’t ever let anyone anyone tell your not beautiful or important! You are worthy! You are loved! You are chosen! You are beautiful beautiful! The king of kings and Lord of Lords paid a price for you! Jesus John 3:16
Commons and Lords trouble ahead?
Large parts of the Kwasi Kwarteng plan need legislation
- Investment Zones need legislation for the tax changes
- Strike rule changes need primary legislation
- Speeding infrastructure projects needs ne laws
NICs change already in Commons
Who is fooled by moron & Far-right chancer, Claire Fox?
She's ended up in House of Lords due to #Brexit Party lies. Talks unadulterated sh*t, starting with pro-fracking tosh
About time #bbcqt producers made an effort to avoid #ClaireFox who represents no-one & nothing. Awful https://t.co/Iiz8U2M04Q

NEW: NI Protocol Bill will have its second reading in the Lords on 11th October.
This will be followed by 3 committee days on 25th, 31st October and 2 November with the final day of committee to be scheduled early/mid November.
The Bill is being rammed through.
Like the monarchy, the House of Lords is a constitutionally bonkers concept that in theory has no place in a modern liberal democracy. But in practice it actually works pretty well as a check on executive overreach & I for one would be sad to see it go.

Every topic has multiple significators to assess—
for instance a person’s character:
Asc, ☽ and ☿ and their lords
for a person’s wealth:
2nd house, 𐌈 and ♃ and their lords
Over recent weeks we’ve seen that many of the people who screamed the loudest for “democracy” during Brexit, in fact, hold quite a limited view of it.
Will be interesting to see how these part-time democracy cheerleaders react to the House of Lords consideration.
courage, honesty and work.
There were many against him, from their former colonizer France and its ally Ivory Coast, to feudal lords and chieftains... He was assassinated by his best friend. A week before he died he said ‘While revolutionaries as individuals can be murdered,
Am I right that there is no consideration of a UK-wide, proportionally-representative voting system in these plans? Really, a cascade of subsidiarity based on the crooked timber of FPTP? What an incoherent joke https://t.co/FI9NWcQRF1
The lack of the sort of oversight provided by the lords is one of the fundamental failings of the Scottish Executive.
Scotland didn’t vote for Brexit!
Scotland didn’t vote for revolving door Tory PMs.
Scotland didn’t vote for royalty.
Scotland didn’t vote for Austerity.
Scotland didn’t vote for 850. Lords.
Scotland didn’t vote for an English Union.
Scotland didn’t vote for BBC.
Reform of the House of Lords isn’t a priority for me. I feel on balance it has in recent times been a force for good & has worked how it should. That said if Labour go big on it I can live with it but it will need to sit within the vision for Britain Starmer needs to create.
