Why is this even a debate? No child, teenager, young adult addresses an elder by their first name PERIOD! It’s either Ma’am or Ms. <insert name> until they tell you otherwise. It doesn’t matter that it’s #MayaAngelou it’s protocol. If you disagree you weren’t raised worth a damn! https://t.co/iEA7U292C8
Apparently some of our young folks are tripping on an old clip of Dr. #MayaAngelou. I wrote this back in 2014 after Mother Maya passed and it offers some context for why you need to put some respeck on her name. #PutAHandleOnIt #ThatIsAll https://t.co/yqp1i7Vj6k
🙏🏿Respect your elders. It does NOT always mean you will agree. Who else was raised this way? Comment below👇🏿👇🏿😎✊🏿✊🏿💥 #respectyourelders #rizzaislam #mayaangelou #Farrakhan #denzelwashington #Rizzanews #rizzawithfacts #rizzagotfacts #intellectualxtremist #intellectualxtremists
If you spoke to a grown person by their first name when I was growing up you would be corrected immediately. This was considered very disrespectful and made it look as though you were on the same level as an adult, that’s a no no...

@eugenegu I'm happy most people are seeing through this faux #MayaAngelou outage.
Accomplished Black woman in the 80s, quite rare, recalls being called "girl" and every lower name in the book. She asks for respect, she's earned it. Give it.
This ain't it Twitter.
Just came to Twitter and saw #MayaAngelou trending for checking a young Queen for not calling her Ms. Angelou.... 🤣🤣🤣
Ya’ll wasn’t raised right or you just yapping on socials as usual https://t.co/9HmNfHDfKN
#MayaAngelou is trending bc a teenager believed that she could address an elder, a prophetic writer & teacher by her first name. Ms Angelou was correct. I’m a grown women & I call my teachers “Baba”out of RESPECT 4 there knowledge they bring 2 me despite a 10yr difference in age!
This cancellation generation that we are in the midst of is terrible. It attempts to discount and overlook a lifetime of work all because of onething we don’t see eye to eye on. It’s void of grace and a lonely hill to die on thinking you’re the only one who is right. #MayaAngelou https://t.co/RfXge0T7ZJ
@Tacky_Nerd Some people act like they were raised by wolves instead of human beings. Anyone who has a problem with Ms. Angelou's statement it's because their parent(s) failed to teach them the basic premise of respect. #MayaAngelou
A lot of y’all think you should be able to call 60 year old strangers who are respected leaders of the community by their first names and it’s clear you were raised by sewer rats who weaned you on kool aid and hot Cheetos. #MayaAngelou
People mad at this have no manners. They don’t hold doors open, don’t say please and thank you, hell they probably don’t even say excuse me. If what Maya Angelou did was bad, you’re lucky you never met big momma.
Came on here to get some useful info...then saw
#MayaAngelou in the trending que and read why.
The mis-education in these Twittah streets is a cry for help.
Seriously...nevuh evuh call an older, southern black woman by her first name.
I’m upset. This new generation beyond sensitive. They’re growing up on the internet which breeds emotions of all kinds. This video of the most influential Dr. #MayaAngelou is something to learn from! Proper manners. Nothing wrong with LEARNING how to acknowledge someone properly.
I was lucky to take a class with #MayaAngelou at @WakeForest (in 2003, I think?). I called her Dr. Angelou and she addressed students formally. She was the first person to call me Ms. Bianchi. She memorized everyone’s name on Day 1. She asked for respect & gave it in return.
I haven’t commented on the video because the entire notion of coming for DR. MAYA ANGELOU is ridiculous!
IN WHAT WORLD?! Please take several seats and read every book written by her.
p.s. #MayaAngelou passed in 2014. Apparently, folks didn’t know that either 🙃🙃🙃 I can’t. https://t.co/b95tW9o5Ak
So I see #MayaAngelou trending, go take a look and now I'm like, are you serious? In my 20s, working at a college, I always corrected students who just tried to call me Ashley. No ma'am, no sir. Address me correctly. I'm Ms. or Mrs. Ashley. #respect
Only in America can a black woman tell you how she’d like to be addressed, and people have feelings about that, talking about they would have “cursed her out” or “dragged her”. I can’t with this nonsense. What is this? Pick a dead person to pick on Month? Do better. #MayaAngelou
In most African cultures it’s about respecting elders & not education level. I wouldn’t be caught dead calling anyone my momma’s age & above by their first name. As we say in Kriolu, “falta de respeito! bsot ka eh d’colega!” (Disrespectful. You’re not colleagues!) #MayaAngelou
@jandsmcw@yashar One mark of a civilized and decent society is respect and honor for our elders. That’s how I was raised and that’s what I’ve learned in my 55 years of life thus far. We are losing that now in #America.
#MayaAngelou #Wisdom #Respect
#MayaAngelou once said that hate has caused a lot of problems in this world, but has not solved one yet, and honestly this is much more needed to be understood as we go through these horrible situations we never asked for. World peace is begged by many. Love one another please.
Ashé. Ain’t folk got something better to white about? Black folk, especially #BlackWomen, who have PhDs that r not honorary —no disrespect to Sistah Maya—still have folk wanting to call us by our first name. I’m with #MayaAngelou then & Now. You haven’t earned the right! Dr. 2 U https://t.co/c6guejIpiL
If you’re offended maybe take another look and think about how to respect your elders. Then ask “Why did this young lady think she could be so “comfortable” calling an elder by her first name?” and “If you were Dr. Angelou how would you have stood up for yourself?” #MayaAngelou
