29.9% swing for the Lib Dems. They needed 23%. That’s on top of 25% swing in Chesham and Amersham. Was 34% in North Shropshire. All in the space of a year. These were completely rock solid Conservative seats.

maybe the voters of Chesham & Amersham, North Shropshire and now Tiverton are trying to send out a message, if only anyone know what it was

This is the third biggest Con to Lib Dem swing ever Only 72 seats are safer for the Tories than Tiverton and Honiton. On this basis and North Shropshire and Chesham and Amersham, for by elections at least, the Tories don’t have safe seats.

Consider (in one form or another) Honiton was Conservative from 1841 North Shropshire was Conservative from 1832 Chesham and Amersham was Conservative for a century All turned Lib Dem in the last year

There is now ample evidence of a substantial electoral phenomenon happening in the south. Consider these swings Chesham and Amersham-25% (Tory since 1923) North Shropshire: 34% (Tory since 1832) Tiverton: 30% (Tory since 1841) These sorts of swings can't just be dismissed.

@OliverDowden This is just the beginning - if Tories are determined to hang on to the 'Johnson factor' then there will be wipeout at the next election - North Shropshire and Tiverton and Honiton two of the worst Tory election results ever - the people see what he is and what they stand for

Tiverton and Honiton and North Shropshire compared. Very similar constituencies (demographically) producing remarkably similar political outcomes. https://t.co/RqxX7sZj78

Doesn’t need alliances or deals, it just needs Labour, LibDems & the Greens to be realistic about where they can unseat Tories, & to concentrate their effort on those seats. The voters will do the rest. As Tiverton & Honiton, Wakefield, & North Shropshire show - it’s happening! https://t.co/44gfxaD2LC

Not saying we're ahead of the curve but we were reporting on the likelihood of Lib-Lab pacts (possibly the major story of this morning) in December: https://t.co/eDxigfVCVQ

The #TivertonandHonitonByElection was the fourth-largest swing against the governing party since 1945, 38.6% It was a larger swing than North Shropshire. This shows a progressive and increased failure of the Conservative Party. https://t.co/Bgk5yKWXC5

In North Shropshire it was less clear who should be the main challenger - there was barely any history of LD voting in the seat, whereas in Tiverton the LDs were the main challenger in the 2000s, one reason why I thought they would do *very* well here. It now seems...2/

@BritainElects @redalphababe 53% majority in a leave-voting constituency is a stunning result for the LDs by any measure. The political ground is shifting. North Shropshire was not a one-off.

@OlegFilimonovic @richardh4nt @RussInCheshire Indeed there are, interestingly the biggest threat comes from Lib Dem’s and not Labour, even though like Tiverton and North Shropshire, Labour came second to the Tories.

@McJamesA @IanDunt If the seat is historically one of two parties go for who came second to the Tory last time. If it’s a safe seat, that’s not always right: see last night, and North Shropshire. You j it st have to go with the polling, and check the bookies! 1)

@RebeccaJones_03 @BritainElects In fairness, this time the local Labour Party seemed to better understand the situation, and didn't do/say anything foolish. (the North Shropshire CLP really beclowned themselves last time!) Also, good result from Labour in Wakefield.
