One of mine. In 1985, the editor of Apocalypse Now made a family film. They never let him direct again. Celebrating The Wizard of Ozโ€™s superior sequel, for the @Guardian: https://t.co/bKDysrXE9X

Long ago I discussed with @trim_obey the magical genre of genuinely terrifying, dark, &/or sexually charged fantasy movies that were considered appropriate for kids in the 1980s: Return to Oz, Legend, Labyrinth, The Neverending Story, Ladyhawke, Dark Crystal, Princess Bride etc

@rickburin @guardian I read your piece. It was well-written, with structured and rational arguments as to why I should give the film a viewing. Based on your words, I did watch Return to Oz and have one gentle ask in return: never recommend another film to me again.

Between Return To Oz, The Dark Crystal, Willow, and Legend, it's a miracle that any of us made it out of the 80s in once piece...

Personally, I loved Return to Oz, Wheelers and all. But then, Iโ€™d read most of Baumโ€™s sequels, some of which are *dark* for kidโ€™s books, and completely unrelated in tone to the Judy Garland film. https://t.co/XnLIDLSTdx

@rickburin @JimMFelton @guardian I've bee fascinated with Return to Oz since I was a kid. Yes, it was scary, but it was fantasy. I made a rather square Tick Tock from boxes at one point. Haha. Its David Shire's magnum opus too, and has a cracking 'behind the scenes' story.

I remember my mum taking me to see Return To Oz at the lovely Granada Cinema in Harrow when it came out. That film really stayed with me - especially the creepy imagery. Great for a young childโ€™s imagination. https://t.co/LBly9NWPvr

@alexvtunzelmann @trim_obey Return to Oz scared me (wtf were the Wheelers?!) but I loved it; I couldnโ€™t at all with the Dark Crystal - taking the essence freaked me out, & I found the Jareth/Sarah relationship in Labyrinth creepy... I was more of a Goonies girl, but even that wasnโ€™t totally kid appropriate https://t.co/RaNiPQDy2b

Return to Oz like all good kids 80s movies (The Witches) had a great mix of fantasy and horror, a great reminder that not everyone lives "happily ever after" The heads screaming "Dorothy Gale" is one of the scariest scenes ever. I love both trips to Oz ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ–ค https://t.co/rLyT75KcEr
