A Howard student/alumn trademarking Spelhouse don’t sit right with me for several reasons
It has been brought to our attention that there has been a little controversy on social media with our company applying for the trademark Spelhouse.
https://t.co/XWkSuVxrokIf you applied for the trademark because you care so much about protecting Spelhouse from culture vultures, why didn’t you apply to trademark “The Mecca”. Following that logic wouldn’t you want to protect your own school as well? 🤔
https://t.co/op8TOZZ8EX@ShopLHP my thing is you know spelhouse has been around and poppin for decades, yet no white people have touched that trademark. what this sounds like to me is you using cultural appropriation as an excuse to protect your money. as a man of morehouse im respectfully asking you to drop it
I don’t understand why brands are so dedicated to pissing off their target demographic. It’s a million black owned brands who sell spelhouse gear who didn’t try to trademark or piss off customers. Why would I shop w/ you when I can just go to them?
https://t.co/8UH8oEoLA3Second, “SpelHouse” does not exist. Spelman and Morehouse don’t even share a bookstore. Two separate entities.
SpelHouse merch has been independently sold for years and no one has been so thirsty... he could’ve made plenty of money w/o a trademark in question.
“SpelHouse” was a thing before your brand and will be long after. You are the culture vulture. This is ugly of you and anyone who supports it.
https://t.co/tysCNxCdUXA non Spelhouse business wanting to trademark “Spelhouse” to protect the name/brand from culture vultures sounds a lot like you want to be the only vulture.
😂this exactly why I’ll always just give my coins to our sis over at Spelbox
https://t.co/e0XC7kbWBkAll that “it’s a smart business decision” and “Spelhouse should’ve been trademarked by the school” business is irrelevant.
It’s actually fumbling the bag because who is buying the merch from someone with poor intentions? What sales are you bagging when we see your character?
Bullshit. You didn’t attend Spelhouse and the term has been around and used for many years. If anything you would be the Culture Vulture you’re referring to. It was shady .
https://t.co/ZFAe4IdsX5How you gatekeeping Spelhouse from ‘culture vultures’ and neither institution is your alma mater? This removes opportunity for students who attends to make Spelhouse paraphernalia. Idiot.
a nigga that doesn’t attend morehouse nor spelman trying to trademark spelhouse for his own brand😭😭😭wow
He sells “Spelhouse” merch. Makes no sense for him to let someone else trademark it and stop his bag when it’s just sitting around for the claiming. My boy got a trademark attorney and everything. I’m low key proud of his business savvy lol
https://t.co/bcVX4AHtsJbye i’m finna just make some AUC gear for us to wear. clark always being left out and spelhouse always got legalities happening. let us live.
Capitalism has the Brother tryna expand for personal gain like Spelhouse hasn’t been a part of Atlanta’s cultural pride for decades
https://t.co/DKRyEhFbEXBuddy might as well go ahead and take the Spelhouse gear off his page...
Y’all really gaslighting tf outta Spelhouse students and alumni... you know good and damn well if a FAMU student tried to trademark “The Mecca” there would be an UPROAR... pls stop the cap.
Fam this shit is funnier than it should be. Imagine we putting the homecoming invites out with Spelhouse and homie stops it cause they can 💀
@HiMyNameIs_Shay My God. I can’t imagine seeing my younger SpelHouse siblings to come who want to make SpelHouse apparel on campus to get some extra bread, but can’t because this mf, WHO DIDNT EVEN GO HERE, decided to trademark the phrase. That’s fucked.
“Spelhouse” hasn’t been trademarked because EVERYONE uses it, and it should be available for public use. Trademarking it, ESPECIALLY without any real connection to the school is major culture vulture behavior and also just super weird.
i guarantee no one would care about this spelhouse issue if they didn’t know the owner of the brand was a howard alum. companies/brands do this all the time.
https://t.co/o8mkZZIW6LThis man really said he applied to trademark “Spelhouse” to protect it from culture vultures but he didn’t even apply to trademark his OWN school, “the Mecca”....
https://t.co/UVhjLblVH6Damn I really liked that spelhouse crew. Why are niggas, niggas?? SMH
Worst part of the spelhouse thing is LHP has had their work appropriated before. It wasn’t too long ago another brand reposted their clothes and tagged themselves as if it was theirs. Why continue that cycle?
you at spelhouse hoco and a lightskin nigga ask you where you got that shirt from you just gotta run atp.
@ShopLHP This is crazy and tone deaf. His excuse was as if yt ppl really were going to ever trademark “Spelhouse”
There’s literally no interests because the market is too damn niche.
This would be just as crazy as Bey trademarking the word “Homecoming”
