Steven Matz is getting tattooed in his fourth spring start. Two home runs and a sharp double have the Nationals up, 5-0, after half an inning.
Matz threw 35 pitches. His spring ERA jumped from 5.19 to 9.31.
Steven Matz has a career 3.98 ERA and has barely been above replacement level over the last 2 seasons.
There are plenty of reasons to be skeptical of his future that go far beyond a brutal spring training start today.
Anthony Rendon, who already took Steven Matz deep, now takes Mets closer Edwin Diaz deep to center. 6 of the 21 batters the Nationals have sent to plate so far today have homered, including Rendon and Gomes twice a piece. It's 10-2.
Steven Matz' fourth spring start featured a first inning that went awry. Adam Eaton opened scoring with a solo homer and Yan Gomes doubled down with a three-run shot.
After all that, Matz gave up five runs over 35 pitches.
Banking on Steven Matz is like living in tornado alley with a storm door that is on its last hinges .... only so much wear and tear ..... he’s still young but with his body and the amount of surgery done , he still trying to throw that hard
Rough first inning of work for Steven Matz against the Washington Nationals.
Lead off HR from Adam Eaton, RBI double off the bat of Matt Adams & a 3-run HR for Yan Gomes resulted in a five run (all earned) inning. #Mets
I know it’s only spring training so not gonna go nuts but 8 runs given up in 2 IPs for Steven Matz today? Hopefully he is “working on” things. He does throw out some doozies during the regular season. Hopefully those are minimized come the regular season.
Back to sports: Steven Matz has gotta figure out how not to have these intermittent Charlie Brown games. He can look so good, but when he's a little off, it's all fireworks. That's bad for business. DeGrom is so dope bc even when he's WAY off, he can stop the bleeding...

After today's start by Steven Matz I may have to reconsider my comments. He really does tend to have alot of games where he struggles early and it just snowballs out of control and other times he can look great. That inconsistency is definitely an issue
Steven Matz tends to have these stinkers way too often. When he struggles early it gets to him and usually can't stop the bleeding. He's very inconsistent and obviously has his health issues https://t.co/r1HSVh4u0N
