Terry was a colleague and friend of boundless humor, buoyant talent and immense kindness. The hours we spent, he and I and Elisabeth, trading stories and opinions about the art form we love, will be a treasure to me always. I'm devastated. https://t.co/3kPEq5E66n

The Wall Street Journal theater critic Terry Teachout, who has died at 65, was a man of honor, kindness and a vast erudition he wore with unpretentious ease. His love for theater, and his eagerness to write about it, was inexhaustible. This is heartbreaking news.

This is shocking and terribly sad. A great critic and irreplaceable champion of the theater, the rare national critic who regularly covered regional houses all over the US. Also, just far kinder and more generous online than anyone else. RIP Terry Teachout https://t.co/ZyHopVy9Tg

Well, this is terrible news. @TerryTeachout1 & I shared messages, tips, & the weight of the widowed life in the wake of the death of his beloved Hilary. I was thrilled later to see him fall in love again. I'm so sorry he's gone. Beautiful writer & person. https://t.co/6X59I2RfkV

Terry Teachout was one of my favorite Twitter follows. He didn't know how to use it to be glib or cruel like you're supposed to. It was just great bits on old music, film, and shows, and bracingly earnest glimpses into his own grief and love(s). Think I only met him once but RIP.

He had great spirit, and a great spirit. Goodbye, far too soon, to @TerryTeachout1. My thoughts are particularly with his beloved Cheril, who lost her mother just days ago. https://t.co/5cMQFsQkXQ

If you ever saw a comedy when Terry Teachout was in the audience, you’ll remember his big, joyous laugh — he LOVED the theater. @petermarksdrama and I delighted in crossing swords with him on our podcast because he was always such a good sport about it all. What a loss.

A fine writer and careful thinker, a lover of essential art and artists, and most of all, a thoughtful, graceful friend. This is too young for someone so rare and good, and devastating for all of us honored to know him. https://t.co/p2gHY0r0av via @WSJ

It's been an awful day for Terry Teachout's many friends and admirers. RIP, Terry. You were one of a kind and will always be terribly missed. A talented and prolific man who seemed a success at everything he set his mind to—and a truly fabulous friend. https://t.co/snMltNW4wq

God, I wish I had something more profound to say about Terry Teachout than “he was a good critic, a good artist, and a good person.” Maybe that’s all that needs to be said. What a loss. RIP.

I got to know Terry Teachout only through a correspondence that began when we met each other on Twitter. I found him kind, generous, impassioned, and exceptionally supportive. His loss will be felt deeply, in criticism and in theater.

Terry Teachout, 1956-2022 Wonderful tribute by John Podhoretz. Terry was a very nice man, and a very rare critic, capable at once of broad and enthusiastic appreciation, and a fine and discriminating taste. May his memory be a blessing. https://t.co/BA4iIUEvN9 via @commentary

Terry Teachout wrote a lot of things. I’m not sure I ever read anything more moving than when he wrote about losing his wife. This passage equally describes the worlds loss of him. RIP. https://t.co/W9IhpJcyV6 https://t.co/MUL0a8OpbR

"For those of us still on earth... it seems there is no weaning away from the people we love and lose: they are always there, dissolved into the completeness of eternity, waiting patiently—and, I suspect, indifferently—for the little resurrection that is memory." --Terry Teachout https://t.co/A91gGv6fB5

Terry was a lovely man, a great writer and an infectious and informed enthusiast of the arts, whose work was filled with joy over the process of creating. I learned something from every piece he wrote. A true loss on many fronts. https://t.co/UXATAFy4uh

One of the things I admired most about Terry Teachout and hold as a personal model: his old-school eagerness to celebrate the stuff (and people) he loved. He was abundantly clear about the stuff he didn’t like, of course, but at his best he was one of the great enthusiasts

Terry Teachout (@TerryTeachout1), who died today, wrote frequently for the Weekly Standard. His last piece for us was in the magazine's next-to-last issue—this attempt to explain why John Wayne is remembered nowadays in ways that Gary Cooper is not. https://t.co/S7lScbVG6Z https://t.co/xyK3FoGvvC

I only talked to Terry Teachout occasionally on Twitter & I don't claim to have had any kind of real relationship with him. But man, I liked him a whole lot, as a writer & a person. It was so wonderful to see him find love again after his wife passed away in 2020. This is awful.
